The Lost Words book
The Illustrator/Writer: The coming together of author Robert Macfarlane and award-winning illustrator Jackie Morris to create The Lost Words is seen as inspirational and pivotal point by many. He is a word-collector and mountain-climber - and he has 3 young children who have taught him so much about the world. In 2017, The American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded him the E.M Forster Award for Literature. Jackie Morris lives in a cottage on the cliffs of Pembrokeshire, and has illustrated over 40 books. Her ability to capture the wildness, essence, power, character and wisdom of the natural world is a source of inspiration to any who see them.
Description: The Lost Words is a ‘book of spells’ that seeks to conjure back the near-lost magic and strangeness of the nature that surrounds us. After seeing that the Oxford Junior Dictionary removed common words concerning nature and replaced them with tech words, the response was this book to honor these “lost words”. It transcends age barriers inspiring children and moving adults with its wide appeal. It is a large hardback book – over A4 in size, and the gold lettering and eye catching ’charm’ of goldfinches on the front cover give a hint of the treasures that lie within. Each lost word is conjured back to importance through Robert’s powerful spells and Jackie’s illustrations. They are called ‘spells’ rather than poems as they are designed to be spoken (or sung!) out loud in order to summon back these words and creatures into our hearts.
Details: 11 × 15 inches, 128 pages, hardcover, thick paper, full color
A Note From Erika: This is one of my favorite books in my twenty five years of buying books for the shop. True magic!
